Beijing's efforts to improve air quality applauded

(BEIJING, June 6) -- Officials from the International Olympic Committee and an Italian research institute have lauded Beijing's efforts in improving air quality for the Olympic Games, according to Beijing Daily.

"The IOC has been devoted to promoting improvement of air quality and sustainable development in the Olympic host cities, and we are pleased to see Beijing honor its bid pledges by taking measures to achieve remarkable progress in this area. We believe that Beijing will ensure quality air for the Olympic Games and will leave rich environmental legacy," said Pal Schmitt recently. Schmitt is the chairman of the IOC Sport and Environment Commission.

Dr. Ivo Allegrini, director of Italy's Institute for Atmospheric Pollution, has witnessed the progress that Beijing has made in the past five years in this area. Since 2003, he has been involved in air quality control with authorities of Beijing and other cities. He stressed Beijing's short-term and long-term measures and said Beijing's efforts should be an example for other cities in China. He believed that China will see an overall improvement in air quality within several years.

The officials' remarks were made in the wake of updates by officials and experts from Beijing's environmental protection agency, BOCOG and the Lausanne and Rome branches of the China Academy of Sciences at the end of May and early June, respectively.

Four cities to compete to host the 2016 Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee announced on June 4 that Chicago (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Madrid (Spain) have made it on to the shortlist of cities bidding to host 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Candidate Cities were accepted unanimously from seven Applicant Cities, which included Prague (Czech Republic), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar).


"All the bids were of a very high standard," said IOC President Jacques Rogge. "It is a tribute to the health of the Olympic Movement that the field was so strong. I congratulate the Candidate Cities and I hope that those cities which were unsuccessful this time have benefited from the process."

The Olympic Stadium in Beijing, also known as "bird nest," was inaugurated this Thursday in it’s final form. As commemoration will be held and test an athletics competition, with the presence of Liu Xiang, the world champion and Olympic 110 m hurdles.

Liu and more about one thousand athletes, and a hundred of them foreigners, are involved until the Sunday of the event, which was praised by Kevan Gosper, vice president of the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

"It was perfect," said the manager. "Athletes around the world will be more happy to come here in August than could imagine."

The structure of beams intertwined, with a capacity of 90 thousand spectators, will be the center of the Games and place more symbolic, since the scenario is, among other activities, from ceremonies to open and close.

To Liu Xiang, Chinese idol who has a series scheduled for this afternoon, will be the opportunity to test for the first time the rubber coating of soil and not a chance to record a good time, according to his coach.

This is just one of the 42 tests planned before the Olympics. "This will allow us to detect the problems and prepare ourselves the best possible way for the event," said Chen Xuxun, responsible for the press in the Olympic stadium.

O Estádio Olímpico de Pequim, também conhecido como "ninho de pássaro", foi inaugurado nesta quinta-feira em sua versão definitiva. Como comemoração e teste será realizada uma competição de atletismo, que conta com a presença de Liu Xiang, campeão mundial e olímpico dos 110 m com barreiras.

Liu e aproximadamente mais mil atletas, sendo uma centena deles estrangeiros, participam até o domingo do evento, que foi elogiado por Kevan Gosper, vice-presidente do COI (Comitê Olímpico Internacional).

"Foi perfeito", comentou o dirigente. "Os atletas do mundo inteiro estarão mais contentes do que poderiam imaginar ao chegarem aqui em agosto."

A estrutura de vigas entrelaçadas, com capacidade para 90 mil espectadores, será o centro dos Jogos e o local mais emblemático, já que será o cenário, entre outras atividades, das cerimônias de abertura e encerramento.

Para Liu Xiang, ídolo chinês que tem uma série prevista para esta tarde, será a oportunidade de testar pela primeira vez o revestimento de borracha do solo e não uma chance para registrar um bom tempo, de acordo com seu treinador.

Esta é apenas uma das 42 provas previstas antes dos Jogos Olímpicos. "Isto nos permitirá detectar os problemas e nos prepararmos da melhor maneira possível para o evento", disse Chen Xuxun, responsável pela imprensa no estádio olímpico.
