Hillary critica ação de empresa brasileira.

"Populismo é bom e nós gostamos"

Em passagem ontem por cidadezinhas rurais da Dakota do Sul, Hillary Clinton criticou a compra de uma processadora de carne por uma empresa brasileira. "Eu me oponho ao negócio e, como presidente, aprimorarei a lei agrícola para impedir a consolidação" do setor, disse a ex-primeira-dama. A "farm bill" foi aprovada ontem.

O negócio a que ela se refere é a aquisição de divisão da Smithfield Foods, baseada na Virgínia, pela brasileira JBS-Friboi, por US$ 565 milhões. Isso faz da brasileira a maior produtora de carne dos Estados Unidos, à frente da gigante Tyson Foods, e acontece um dia depois de a brasileira anunciar a compra da National Beef Packing Co. por outro meio bilhão de dólares. O negócio depende ainda de aprovação federal.

Outro político se queixou da operação, dessa vez o senador republicano Chuck Grassley. "Honestamente, não sei até onde [o Departamento de Justiça] vai deixar essas consolidações acontecerem. Agora, os produtores poderão vender seu gado para apenas três grandes empresas", falou, em comunicado.

Nessa eleição, o voto rural vale ouro. A Dakota do Sul realiza suas prévias no dia 3 de junho.

McCain é atacado por defender etanol brasileiro.

John McCain colocou no ar um anúncio em Iowa, chamado "Accountable" (responsável). Nele, entre outras coisas, defende "energia limpa". Foi o suficiente para o protecionista Partido Democrata local sair a pedradas atrás do senador republicano. "Suas grandes idéias incluem prejudicar os fazendeiros de Iowa ao acabar com o investimento federal em etanol norte-americano e aumentar incentivos para os fazendeiros brasileiros importarem seu etanol para os EUA", disse Brooke Borkenhagen, porta-voz local do partido.

É uma das maiores distorções dessa campanha até agora. Iowa é o principal produtor de milho dos EUA. O etanol norte-americano é feito de milho. Só que é ineficiente, e precisa de subsídio do governo, hoje em 51 centavos de dólar por galão produzido. Pelo mesmo motivo, não pode sofrer competição livre com o etanol brasileiro, de cana-de-açúcar, mais eficiente e barato. Assim, além do subsídio, o governo dos EUA ainda cobra uma taxa de US$ 0,54 por galão exportado de etanol brasileiro.

O senador republicano já defendeu o produto brasileiro algumas vezes, dizendo que lutará para acabar com a tarifa. Quando a porta-voz fala que McCain quer acabar com o "investimento" nos americanos e aumentar "incentivos" para os brasileiros, distorce as palavras barbaramente.
